Set in a universe of magical realism, a boastful father prattles on superficially about his daughter to another parent in the school pick up line, but is unable to perceive her when it matters most. Upon reading Samanta Schweblin’s short story “Mariposas”, I was struck by the fantastical nature of the work, and its use of Magical Realism, a literary genre made popular by numerous Latin American novels such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “100 Years of Solitude” (1967).
